What happens to my community solar if I move?

This is one of the most common worries before signing up: "If I move, am I stuck?" The short answer: no. But what happens depends on where you're moving.

Moving within the same utility territory

If you stay within the same utility's service area (for example, moving from one National Grid town to another in upstate New York), your subscription typically transfers with you. You update your account information with the new address, and credits continue appearing on your bill at the new location. The solar farm doesn't change — just the address where your credits are delivered.

Moving to a different utility in the same state

This depends on the program. Some states allow transfers between utilities, others don't. In many cases, your current subscription ends and you'd sign up fresh with a farm in your new utility's territory. The good news: there are no penalties for ending your subscription, so the transition is clean.

Moving out of state

Your subscription ends — community solar credits are tied to a specific state's program. But again, there's no cancellation fee or penalty. If your new state has community solar (and many do), you can sign up there.

The key point: no lock-in

Community solar subscriptions through programs like Ampion are month-to-month. You can cancel anytime without penalty. Moving is just one reason to cancel — but the freedom applies regardless of the reason.

Before you move

Notify your provider (Ampion, or whoever manages your subscription) that you're moving. They'll handle the utility-side paperwork. If you're moving within the same territory, ask about transferring rather than canceling — it's often seamless.
